A far too eloquent silence. Karl Barth's inexplicable reluctance to address or comment the bloody avengement of the Hungarian Freedom Fight in 1956

The present paper touches upon Reinhold Niebuhr’s open letter addressed to Karl Barth following the putting down of the Hungarian freedom fight against the Communist regime. Niebuhr’s letter entitled ‘Why is Barth silent on Hungary?’ was published on 23 January 1957 in The Christian Century. I intend to pursue an analysis of Barth’s inexplicable silence over the issue, including his outspokenness during the Second World War as well as the similarly striking attitude of his disciple Josef Lukl Hromádka. The attitude of these theologians can indeed be contrasted by the shocking abnegation of two declared, yet deeply indignant Communists: Jean-Paul Sartre and Peter Fryer. It appears that Barth’s image as a systematic theologian – and especially as a Christian ethicist – may have to be partially re-evaluated by and for contemporary theologians.

Localization and Topography of the Sheol in the Prayers of the Hebrew Bible The critical research of the individual lament and thanksgiving psalms of the Hebrew Bible has always paid special attention to the netherworld concepts appearing in the texts. These sources often use the spatial image of the netherworld in connection with the misery experienced by the praying one. From these references it is clear that in the Hebrew Bible the netherworld (Sheol) should be considered as a place, and in most of the texts it does not have personal aspects. Even though this statement is true, we cannot read detailed descriptions of the netherworld in the Psalms (or in the Hebrew Bible in general), and this does not really help us drawing a map of the netherworld based on these sporadic references. The present study deals with two issues in detail. First, in connection with the problem of the localization of the netherworld is the compatibility of the cosmological references which point to different directions (the netherworld is under the surface of the earth; the netherworld is under the waters of the depth) is a crucial question. Second, it is an essential point to examine, which parts of the netherworld appear in the sources, and if one can attempt to determine their location and relationship more precisely. The identification of the inner parts of the netherworld as they appear in the Hebrew Bible is particularly difficult because in the sources we come across descriptions of the general milieu of the place rather than naming specific parts of it. Therefore, the second part of the present study investigates several phrases (1. the gates of the therworld, 2. the inner parts of the netherworld, 3. the foundation of the mountains) that might be considered as specific parts of the netherworld in the sources.

Bishop Albert Bereczky (1893-1966) and the revival movement. Albert Bereczky’s conversion

This original research paper discusses Bishop Albert Bereczky’s (1893-1966) firstcontacts with revivalism, especially his spiritual conversion experience during his adolescentyears. Albert Bereczky, Bishop of the Danubian Church District from 1948 to 1958, was one ofthe most significant, and yet controversial persons of the Reformed Church in Hungary duringthe 20th Century. From a popular preacher of the Revival Movement of the 1920s, churchplanter of the 1930s, rescuer of Jews during the War, he became the tool of state interest of theCommunist regime in the 1950s. This paper sorts out the origins of his turn to the revival move-ment, like his troubled childhood, the emotional and financial insecurity of an illegitimate child,his troubled relationship with his biological father, the positive example of his stepfather, and hisdeviant adolescence behavior. By showing examples of his personal accounts the paper discusseswhether Bereczky went through a ‘sudden’ or a ‘gradual’ conversion experience.
